Nordic Skiing Info 2010
The Fernie Nordic Society provides access to approximately 70 kms of groomed trails. The club started in 2007 and has brought great cross country skiing to the Fernie area. The trails are well groomed when there is snow.
- Fernie Golf Course - 12 km Nordic Trails.
Mainly flat and are groomed regularly, when we have a snowfall or as needed.
- Golf Course Back Country Loop - 5 km Nordic trail.
This trail runs along the Elk River for approximately 5 kms and then ends and you will have to ski back. It has some small hills but mostly flat with a back country experience. Groomed regularly, however with a shortage of snow this year it has been hard to keep it in good shape.
- Golf Course Jim Cana - 3 km Nordic trail.
This section is separated from the golf course towards the highway. It has some nice trails where you can see a few really old Champion Cottonwoods. Groomed regularly when there is a snowfall.
- Fernie Alpine Resort Nordic Ski and Snowshoe Trails - 10 km
this is not more challenging with some vertical so novice skiers could be challenged. Groomed daily.
- Coal Creek Loop - 20 kms Nordic Trail.
Mainly flat and is groomed regularly by the snowmobile club. Remember is you ski out you will have to ski back. Snowmobile club groomed daily for cross country skiing and snowmobiling.
- Island Lake Lodge - 25 kms Nordic Trails.
This is not more challenging with some vertical. Novice skiers will be OK on the bottom and challenged to get up to the lodge trails. If you wish you can always hire a ride with Island Lake cats but will have to make arrangements at their office downtown Fernie. Groomed daily.

Golf Course February 18th, 2009
Groomed the Golf Course, Dike and Back Country Trail tonight Feb 18, 2009. Just track
setting the centre trails to Mtce road from the Club House are not the best but everything
else is good. Some areas are a little hard and not taking the track setter but in
general good conditions still with some bare patches.
Golf Course February 16th, 2009
Golf course, dyke, golf course back country trails groomed with roller.
Golf Course February 15th, 2009
I was a disappointed that the golf course was not groomed for todays fresh snow. Regardles of the ungroomed trails,
I had a good day of classic skiing. The fresh 3 inches made it better that my ski on Febuary 8th where conditions were
hardpacked and ice. Today was soft and quite easy gliding.
Golf Course & Dike Grommed February 9th, 2009
Golf Course - February 8th, 2009
The golf course and dike were groomed February 9th, 2009. Went for a ski at 11am and the conditions were hardpacked and ice.
Some areas needed more snow, specialy close to the railway tracks side which I will avoid if we don't get any more snow.
Other than that is was great fun. Here's some photos of the trip. Report by Patrick Burke
Golf Course - February 2nd, 2009
The golf course and dike were groomed Monday night. The warm weather made the snow soft enough to remove the large holes in parts of the trail created by a Mad Trapper with snow shoes. The course is very flat now, and is great for Classic and Skating Sking.
The days are getting longer and there is still enough light to ski till 6PM.
Golf Course - Wednesday January 31st , 2009 Groomed
The golf course and dike were groomed Saturday morning and night. With the snow that fell it is in faily good shape. It is icy in a few sections
but quite fast and easy skiing. Here Peter and Leslies ski visit to Fernie (Photos by Patrick Burke).
Golf Course - Wednesday January 28th , 2009 - Dave Smith
The golf course and dike were groomed this morning and with the new snow are in much better shape. The trails at the ski hill are also in very good condition.
Happy skiing.
Golf Course - January 24 & 25, 2009 - Ian Henze
Golf Course groomed Saturday Jan 24 with dike. Sunday Jan 25, did outside
perimeter trail only still trying to get the ginzu working properly.
We will be going out on Jan 27 or 28 to get more work just chewing up
the icy trails then setting track after.
Grooming Report Jan 17, 2009
The Golf course, Dike to east fernie Bridge, and Partial Back Country trail along river
were all done today. Some icy conditions exist and wil continue until we get more snow or
fix the Ginzu Groomer that allows ice cutting prior to Track setting. Regular grooming
starts week of Jan 19, 2009.
Grooming Report January 4, 2009
I was able to groom today, with the roller and track setter. Did the golf course,
dyke to the east fernie bridge, and the small back country trail to the railroad track.
It is snowing like crazy and won't take long to be filled in.
Don
(Many Thanks to Don for using his personal snowmobile to groom today while ours is
in the repair shop.)
